The Funky Buddha brewery is based in Oakland Park, Florida. It was just a tea and hooka bar at first. It started serving up brews 2007, however, it initially was not producing it’s own products. In 2010 they set out to start brewing and selling their own beer. Some 8 years later and Funk Buddha is one of the largest craft brew operations in Florida.
The Floridian beer is a classic hefeweizen beer with some unique twists. The description by Funky Buddha is as follows:
Our unfiltered and refreshing German-style wheat beer is full on flavor yet light on the palate. Authentic hefeweizen yeast creates the compelling aromas of bananas, citrus, and cloves, while all the wheat and malt body perfectly captures the brilliance of a golden Florida sunset.
Best Served: Standard beer glass or pilsner glass
While working in Florida, I stopped in at the local target for some essential vittles, including some brews. What I found was the Floridian. In a state that is overran by IPAs and other hoppy beers, I was pleased to find a good german styled wheat beer. Once I tried it was even more pleased. It was sweeter than most hefeweizens and it was slightly more carbonated as well.
The taste was definitely in line with a normal wheat beer but a slightly stronger sweetness and a bold fruit flavors which seems to come from the yeast used. It’s got a banana hint as well as non-bitter hop and floral tone. There seems to also be a bit of citrus in the flavor but it is not as pronounced as an orange-wheat beer. The aroma is slightly sweeter than a regular wheat beer but very pleasant. It is much more muted compared to the taste of the beer, however.
Aroma: A simple wheat and citrus aroma. Pleasing but faint.
Taste: Taste is exceptional for a wheat beer. Lemon, banana, sweet, and wheaty.
Texture: The beer is rich like a normal wheat beer but still bubbly and refreshing.
Finish: The finish is more lemon and wheat.
Comparisons: Blue moon but with lemon rather than orange.
